This is a lovely book for young children It is not all rainbows and sunshine, animals DO get hurt and sick, but ALL survive and it does have a little bit of educational value; the wild man (Tammylan) tells the four children about the wildlife and plants of the countryside. There are a few errors; the most glaring is Rory packs pencils and waterpaints, Benji packs books, Shelia packs sewing gear and Penny packs soft toys but there is no mention of them using them; most glaring with Rory because he is surrounded by beautiful scenery; Rory does not paint a beautiful sunset; Benji does not appear to read his books, Shelia does not do any sewing and Penny does not snuggle any of her soft toys; the author must have forgotten she mentioned what the children packed after she'd typed it. This book is the first of a trilogy and the most interesting; the next two are mostly about farming and so (to me at least) do not have the variety and charm of this book. All in all a good book for children who are six, seven, eight, nine or ten (some scenes may be a little "dark" for toddlers)

COLIN MACINNES (1914-76), son of novelist Angela Thirkell, cousin of Stanley Baldwin and Rudyard Kipling, grandson of Burne-Jones, was brought up in Australia but lived most of his life in London about which he wrote with a warts-and-all relish that earned him a reputation as the literary Hogarth of his day. Bisexual, outsider, champion of youth, ‘pale-pink’ friend of Black Londoners and chronicler of English life, MacInnes described himself as ‘a very nosy person’ who ‘found adultery in Hampstead indescribably dull’ and was much more at home in the coffee bars and jazz clubs of Soho and Notting Hill. A talented off-beat journalist and social observer, he is best known for his three London novels, City of Spades, Absolute Beginners and Mr Love and Justice. MacInnes died of cancer in 1976.

About the Author

 

Thomas Keenan is currently a Professor in the School of Academic & Liberal Studies, Niagara College in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada.  He is also an adjunct member of the Department of Psychology, Brock University.  He is a developmental psychologist with interests in children’s theory of mind, sarcasm & irony comprehension, and music. 


Subhadra Evans completed her PhD in Developmental Psychology at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. She is currently serving as Associate Professor in the UCLA Pediatric Pain and Palliative Care Program, where she researches the impact of chronic pain on family and social relationships, and the use of mind-body medicine to treat chronic pain. She also teaches courses on Child Development, Health Psychology and Introductory Psychology.

Dr Kevin Crowley is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of South Wales. He has published research papers in a number of areas of child development, including bilingual language and literacy development, and play and learning in the early years.
